Web 3.0: Is the internet really headed there

Imagine a world where the infrastructures for the most basic operations are decentralised! This will mean “hope at last” for some web 3.0 enthusiasts.

in your quest to understand what web 3.0 is, you’d really want to buckle up.

frankly, the truest and most accurate definition of web 3.0 might be hard to find. I’ll try to help out, ” from my own think tank”.

To understand web 3.0, here are a few of the many things you should think about;

Web 1.0 and web 2.0

decentralization

blockchain

cryptocurrency

Some people  have categorized the inception of the internet as web 1.0 – with  the next phase coming in with so many moving parts called web 2.0. for context or lack of better way to put it. I’d suggest that you think of the internet between the years 200 and 2023. 2023, because I think that web 3.0 is still budding and sincerely, I’m not sure where in the calendar to place it just yet.

decentralization as the name implies, explains the concept of the internet where its control is spread across rather than being controlled by a single entity or company.

Blockchain on the other hand can be thought of as being a collection of records publicly accessible, that cannot easily be altered, hacked or affected maliciously. From the little I know, I think this is a pretty decent and digestible definition.

For cryptocurrency, I won’t be defining that here because I think many of us kind of already know the gist. However, cryptocurrency is in this discussion because the concept of web 3.0 was popularized from and through the presence of cryptocurrency.

The concept of web 3.0 is supported by modern innovations like virtual reality, augmented reality, metaverse and so forth.

Now, to think of the direction in which the internet is headed is a little bit tricky to determine, because we’ve seen how certain technologies were adopted and later abandoned in the past. Notwithstanding, there’s a semblance of hope for what web 3.0 represents as consumers and producers of technology seem to be adjusting their appetite for more: speed, knowledge, power, control, etc. We can see this in the manifestation through artificial intelligence and machine learning and how they have been widely embraced by the masses.

Additionally, I think that so long as AI, Machine Learning, virtual reality, cryptocurrency, metaverse and so forth remain a trend, the concept of web 3.0 will stay relevant.0
